Alastair Blackwood Hodge

YEAR OF CALL 1997

Background:

Alastair Hodge read Law & German at the Universities of Bristol and Goettingen and was called to the Bar by Inner Temple in 1997.

In addition to a busy practice, he is a Senior Advocacy Trainer for Inner Temple, a member of the Inner Temple Advocacy Training Committee, a member of the Training for the Bar Committee at the Bar Council and Honorary Secretary of the Inner Temple Golfing Society.

Alastair is also a regular after dinner speaker and prior to becoming a Barrister he played “Baloo” at Disneyland Paris.

Employment Law:

Alastair has extensive experience of employment law and is regularly instructed in the Employment Tribunal and the Employment Appeal Tribunal.

He acts for both employers and employees and has particular experience in unfair dismissal, transfer of undertakings and discrimination cases.

He is also experienced in the following areas: confidential information, non-dealing covenants, non-solicitation covenants, non-enticement covenants, springboard injunctions, garden leave injunctions, trade unions, working time.

Cannon v. Chief Constable of Devon & Cornwall Constabulary – acting for Respondent on 10 day sexual orientation discrimination claim.

Whitworth v. Moles Clegg – acting for Claimant in professional negligence action against solicitors arising out of handling of employment claim.

O’Neil v. Quadrangle Group – acting for Respondent on 2 day constructive dismissal and breach of contract claim.

Stevens v. Essex Police – acting for Respondent on 5 day sex and sexual orientation discrimination claim

Schmidt-Edwards v. Edwards Waste Management – acting for Respondent on 7 day unfair dismissal and breach of contract claim.

Wayne v. Kent & Medway NHS Trust – acting for Claimant on 3 day unfair dismissal and religious discrimination claim.

Ajahi v. South West Trains – acting for Claimant in race discrimination claim.

Education Law

Alastair has represented schools in breach of contract claims against building contractors, provided advice on discipline, attendance and admissions issues and has experience in exclusion appeals before independent panels. As a School Governor himself since 2000, Alastair is no stranger to education law.

Lectures

Alastair has delivered over 200 lectures on all aspects of employment law and education law in the last ten years. Renowned for his entertaining style, Alastair is also experienced in providing seminars to lay clients and Human Resources personnel.
